HAL was retained by Gannett Fleming on behalf of Niagara Region to complete a detailed condition survey of the Woodlawn Road Bridge in Welland, Ontario. The project incorporated advanced drone technology alongside conventional investigation methods to support a comprehensive structural assessment of the bridge.

INNOVATIVE DRONE INSPECTION

Challenging access conditions over the river, including select bearing locations and river spans, were successfully inspected using drone technology. This innovative approach enabled detailed visual assessments of difficult-to-access bridge components while improving safety and reducing the need for complex access equipment.

COMPREHENSIVE FIELD INVESTIGATION

The investigation included concrete coring, sawn asphalt sampling, cover meter surveys, AC resistance testing, hammer sounding, and delamination surveys. These assessment methods provided critical information regarding material properties, structural condition, and areas of deterioration throughout the bridge.

TRAFFIC CONTROL AND SAFE EXECUTION

Traffic control measures were implemented throughout the field investigation to maintain public safety and minimize disruptions to roadway users. Careful planning and coordination ensured all inspection activities were completed safely and efficiently within an active transportation corridor.

MODERN SOLUTIONS FOR COMPLEX STRUCTURES

The project demonstrated how drone-assisted inspections can enhance safety, efficiency, and data quality on complex bridge structures. By integrating innovative aerial technology with traditional condition survey techniques, HAL successfully overcame access constraints while delivering reliable and detailed inspection data.
